Abundius

Abundius († around 304 in Rome ) was a Catholic priest , who together with his deacon Abundantius the martyrdom suffered and therefore from the Roman Catholic Church as a saint is worshiped.

Life

According to legend, he was captured with his deacon for refusing to worship the Hercules statue. They were tortured, sentenced to death and beheaded in the Carcer mamertinus . Since Abundius raised the deceased son John of the Senator Marcian to life through prayer on the way to the place of execution and father and son immediately became Christians, Marcian and John were beheaded together with Abundius and Abundantinus.

The epitaph for Abundius is kept in the Vatican Museums .

Adoration

The veneration was first promoted by a woman named Theodora in Rignano Flaminio . Only under Emperor Otto III. the relics were transferred to the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Rome in the 10th century and there, together with those of Theodora, were transferred to the church of Il Gesù in 1583 .

The liturgical day of remembrance in the Roman Catholic Church is September 16.
