Mario Enrico Delpini (born July 29, 1951 in Gallarate , Varese Province , Italy ) is an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Milan .

Life

Mario Delpini, the third of six children of the married couple Antonio and Rosa Delpini, entered the seminary in Milan in 1967 and received the sacrament of priestly ordination on June 7, 1975 from the Archbishop of Milan, Giovanni Cardinal Colombo . After obtaining a licentiate in theology, he worked as a seminary teacher in Milan and Venegono Inferiore . From 2000 to 2006 Delpini was rector of the Milan seminary. In 1998 he called on Catholic clergy in a sermon to "free themselves from the burden of a certain clericalism and managerial efficiency".

On July 13, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the titular bishop of Stephaniacum and ordered him auxiliary bishop in Milan. The Archbishop of Milan, Dionigi Cardinal Tettamanzi , donated him episcopal ordination on September 23 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the President of the Pontifical Council for Legal Texts , Archbishop Francesco Coccopalmerio , the General Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference , Giuseppe Betori , and the Bishop of Novara , Renato Corti , and the auxiliary bishop in Milan, Marco Ferrari . In the same year he became secretary of the Lombard Bishops' Conference, which he remained until 2016.

Since 2012 he has been Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Milan.

On July 7, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Milan. The inauguration took place on September 24th of the same year in the Cathedral of the Archdiocese. Delpini is a member of the Commission for Consecrated Life at the Italian Bishops' Conference.
