Life

Butti was born on April 3, 1847 to the married couple Bernardo and Anna Giudici. He moved to Milan in 1861 to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera , where he took courses with Pietro Magni . During the years of the Scapigliatura , he exhibited one of his first works at the Mostra Nazionale in 1872 , the marble figure of Raffaello Sanzio . In 1874 he also exhibited the figure of Eleonora d'Este in the Palazzo Brera (Palace of Brera) in the Brera district of Milan , which is now in Saint Petersburg . Other works were Caino , Le smorfie, Stizze , San Gerolamo (1875), Il mio garzone and Santa Rosa da Lima (1876), which is now in the Milan Cathedral . The figure of L'angelo dell'evocazione was created for the Cavi-Bussi tomb in the Milan cemetery , he also created the monument to Alberto da Giussano in Legnano , the figure of General Giuseppe Sirtori , located in the public gardens of Milan, and the figure La morente (1891) for a tomb.

The sculpture Il minatore ( Eng : The Miner) was first exhibited in Brera in 1888 and was initially controversial because of its socially critical undertone, but it received a "Grand Prix" at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 and was later awarded several times. Several copies of this figure were made in cast bronze, including one for the tomb of the Düsseldorf industrialist family von Gahlen in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery .

From 1893 to 1913 Butti was a lecturer in sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera . In 1913 he created the figure of Giuseppe Verdi, located in the Piazza Michelangelo Buonarroti in Milan. From 1928 Butti devoted himself to painting. He died on January 31, 1932 in his villa in Viggiù, whose park now houses the Butti Museum.
