La Scapigliatura (from Italian scapigliare : to dishevel your hair) was the name of a group of predominantly Lombard artists and writers in Milan between 1860 and 1880.

Like other European artist groups of those years (such as the Impressionists ), she called for a renewal of art . Following the Parisian bohemian style , the bourgeois lifestyle was rejected. The influence of French writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Gustave Flaubert is also undoubted . The German poets Novalis , Friedrich Hölderlin , ETA Hoffmann and Heinrich Heine are also considered to be models for the Scapigliatura . The scapigliati - the members of the group - turned against the predominance of religion and the rhetoric of the Risorgimento and advocated freer eroticism and the release of drugs . Characteristic of the Scapigliatura was, in addition to anti-bourgeois protest, the glorification of sensual love and evil. In addition, this movement in literature was in dialogue with music and the visual arts. One also speaks of "le tre arti sorelle" (the three sisterly arts).

Notable representatives were the writers Arrigo and Camillo Boito , Emilio Praga , Giuseppe Rovani, Cletto Arrighi (alias Carlo Righetti), Igino Ugo Tarchetti, Giovanni Camerana, Carlo Alberto Dossi , Salvatore Farina, the composer Franco Faccio (he wrote together with Praga the opera I profughi fiamminghi and with Arrigo Boito the opera Amleto ) as well as the young Giovanni Verga and the painters Mosè Bianchi , Vespasiano Bignami , Luigi Conconi , Tranquillo Cremona , Carlo Cressini , Eugenio Gignous , Vittore Grubicy de Dragon , Emilio Longoni , Giuseppe Mentessi , Angelo Morbelli , Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo , Gaetano Previati , Attilio Pusterla , Daniele Ranzoni and Giovanni Segantini .

The young authors wrote for magazines and also published their works in them. Only later were the works published in bound form.
