Angelo Morbelli
Angelo Morbelli ( July 18, 1853 in Alessandria - November 7, 1919 in Milan ) was an Italian painter . He is considered a socially critical representative of Divisionism , a post-impressionist movement.
Live and act
Morbelli was the son of the winery owner Giovanni Morbelli and his wife Giovannina (née Ferraris). As a child he showed a pronounced musical inclination, but could not devote himself to it, as he suffered from progressive hearing damage at the age of seven. So his parents sent him to a local painter to learn how to draw. He later studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera with G. Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi. He mostly painted landscapes and scenes from popular life that were inspired by socialist and humanitarian ideals. He showed a particular interest in the rendering of light effects. He was inspired by Giovanni Segantini and was friends with Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo .
His paintings from the Pio Albergo Trivulzio , a hospice for old people in Milan, are known. The painting Feast day at the Trivulzio Hospice in Milan (1892) hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Morbelli's paintings fetched prices between 50,000 and 200,000 euros in campaigns in the 2010s, and in a few cases significantly more.
