Gaetano Previati (born August 31, 1852 in Ferrara , † June 21, 1920 in Lavagna , Genoa province ) was an Italian painter . He is one of the main representatives of symbolism and later shaped Italian futurism together with Giacomo Balla .

Life

Gaetano Previati was the second son of a master baker from Ferrara. He studied art history at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan . In 1880 he opened his first studio and mainly dealt with portraiture . Through the influence of Giovanni Segantini , Previati later took on the sacred themes. At the end of his life he mainly painted still lifes and landscapes .
