Vespasiano Bignami
Vespasiano Bignami , called Vespa, (born October 18, 1841 in Cremona , Austrian Empire ; died February 28, 1929 in Milan ) was an Italian painter, art critic and editor.
Life
Vespasiano Bignami grew up in Cremona. His brother Osvaldo Bignami (1856–1936) also became a painter. He studied at the Accademia Carrara di Bergamo with Enrico Scuri , among his fellow students were Giuseppe Amisani and Giovanni Barrella . Bignami initially got by in Bergamo as a painter with various commissioned works and continued his work in Milan from 1861 , where he joined the Scapigliatura group. He drew, also under a pseudonym, for the satirical magazines L'Uomo di pietra , Mefistofele and Spirito folletto . He founded the artist community and art magazine “La famiglia artistica”, which took an anti-academic stance. He was committed to socialist ideas, was a member of the local council and wrote for social democratic newspapers. He also wrote Lombard dialect poems .
In 1869 he won a prize donated by Heinrich Mylius in an exhibition at the Brera with the picture Lezione di Botanica . He co-authored the artist biographies of Francesco Barzaghi and Cesare Tallone and wrote studies on Eleuterio Pagliano and Mosè Bianchi . Bignami taught from 1893 to 1921 as a professor for "disegno e figura" at the Accademia di Brera .
His estate is administered by the Fondo Bignami , which is dedicated to promoting the arts.
