Life

Francesco Barzaghi was born in Milan in 1839 as the son of Carlo Barzaghi and Giuseppina Gioli. He received his first training in the studios of Alessandro Puttinati and Antonio Tantardini and then studied at the sculpture school of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera with Giovanni Strazza and Benedetto Cacciatori . There he was also influenced by Vincenzo Vela . From 1880 until his death he held the chair of sculpture at the Accademia di Brera. He created statues and monuments in marble and bronze in the style of Verism , without concessions to recent developments.

His son Prassitele Barzaghi (* 1880) also became a successful sculptor.
