Antonio Tantardini

Antonio Tantardini (born June 12, 1829 in Milan , † March 7, 1879 ibid) was an Italian sculptor.

Life

Antonio Tantardini studied from 1842 at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera with Pompeo Marchesi and then in Florence . In 1852 he caused a sensation with his work Cain, which was exhibited at the Accademia di Brera . As a result, he received numerous commissions for monuments, religious sculptures, tombs and building decorations. In the last few years he has employed several employees and assistants to carry out the many assignments. He showed his work at exhibitions in 1861 in Florence, 1862 in London, 1866 in Berlin, 1873 in Vienna and 1876 in Philadelphia. He also taught as a professor at the Accademia di Brera. Among his students are Francesco Barzaghi and Antonio Spagnoli .

Tantardini, who was influenced by Lorenzo Bartolini and Vincenzo Vela in addition to Marchesi , stood at the transition from classicism to romanticism , which developed into naturalism . His works combine monumentality with soft naturalistic outlines.
