Life

The artistic training began in Milan and was completed with the help of a government grant in Rome . He was committed to antiquity all his life. In 1811 he returned to Milan and worked in Milan until 1825 on statues for the Milan Cathedral, among other things . This was followed by an appointment as professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, a position he held until his death. 1825-1830 he created more than 100 large and small works in Milan. In 1834 the artist's studio burned down, with all models and many sculptures already made in marble perishing. While he was compared in artistic circles at a young age with Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen , his fame later faded. Marchesi was last kk Hofstatuarius and received the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class in 1846 , in 1850 he was raised to the knighthood. France awarded him the Order of the Legion of Honor . He was also a member of 17 art academies.
