Giovanni Strazza
Giovanni Strazza (* 1817 or 1818 in Milan ; † April 18, 1875 there ) was an Italian sculptor.
Life
Giovanna Strazza studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan with Pompeo Marchesi and worked in Francesco Somaini's studio . In 1840 he moved to Rome and completed his training there at the Accademia di San Luca , where he was influenced by the purism of Pietro Tenerani . With the sculpture Ismaele abbandonato nel deserto ( Ismael , left behind in the desert ) he gained recognition in the artistic circles of Rome in 1844.
In 1858 he returned to Milan and in 1860, after a brief teaching position at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, was given the chair of sculpture at the Accademia di Brera, which he held until his death in 1875.
Strazza created sculptures, portrait busts and especially grave monuments. Stylistically, he was at the transition from classicism to romanticism . He showed his work in numerous exhibitions and was represented at the world exhibitions in London in 1862 and in Vienna in 1873 .
One of his most famous works is the bust of the veiled Virgin ( Vergine velata ) made of Carrara marble , which was created around 1850 and came to St. John's on Newfoundland in 1856 , where it is now kept in the Convent of the Presentation Sisters . Such artfully made depictions of veiled people were a popular motif at the time. The figure is interpreted on the one hand as the Virgin Mary, on the other hand against the background of the Risorgimento as the personification of Italy.
