history

Nagle had to leave Ireland under the repression of the English Penal Law and began her schooling in Paris . In 1775 she entered the Order of the Ursulines as a postulant in France , was given the name Honoria and made temporary profession in 1777 . Before passing the final profession she left the Ursulines, returned to Ireland and opened in Killarney ( County Kerry , a Catholic school). She soon established two girls 'schools and five boys' schools in County Cork , also known as the hedge schools .

The first idea of founding her own religious community developed as early as 1775. On Christmas Day 1777 she founded one community under the name "Mother Mary of St. John of God". The resulting religious community was initially called "Sisters of the Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus" and later changed to "Union of Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary". It is popularly known under the name "Presentation Sisters".

Expansion and expansion

By 1800 another five communities had formed around Nagle. But since these were not supposed to live in seclusion , difficulties arose. The bishop of the diocese of Cork finally asked for canonical recognition of the congregation, in the hope that it would be allowed to take solemn vows without the obligation to observe the papal enclosure. Instead, the sisters themselves chose to live in seclusion.

In 1805, 21 years after the death of the founder, the Congregation received papal approbation from Pope Pius VII. Since that time it has been a society of apostolic life .

In 1860 the Catholic schools established by the religious community in Ireland and overseas countries were recognized by the state. From 1866 to 1900 the religious community developed steadily, the first nuns moved to Newfoundland , England , India , the United States , Australia and New Zealand . In Australia, after the papal approval of Pius XII. several congregations together to form a common congregation of the "Presentation Sisters in Australia".

In the course of the renewal of religious life after the Second Vatican Council , the Congregation built a motherhouse and elected a Superior General . In 1976, a decree by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life confirmed the current structures. The following provinces emerged: England, India, Ireland, Latin America , New Zealand, Pakistan , Philippines , Slovakia , Thailand , USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe .
