Francesco Somaini (born May 14, 1795 in Maroggia , † August 13, 1855 in Milan ) was a Swiss sculptor .

Life

Francesco Somaini studied from 1815 to 1822 at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan with Camillo Pacetti . He then worked as a sculptor for the Milan Cathedral from 1823 to 1839 and created, among other things, statues for the altars by Pellegrino Tibaldi from the 16th century. In 1839 he became a professor at the Accademia di Brera, where Angelo Biella , Giovanni Strazza and his nephew Antonio Galli were among his students. He also worked as a cantonal inspector for schools in Ticino.

Somaini created religious and secular sculptures, tombs and portrait busts in the style of classicism , which in later years increasingly turned to verism .
