Antonio Galli (born January 5, 1812 in Viggiù ; † September 23, 1861 ibid) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

Antonio Galli was born in Viggiù in 1812 to Marco Antonio Galli and Maria Somaini. In 1828 he went to Milan , where he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and worked in the studio of his uncle Francesco Somaini . There is no evidence of a stay in Rome and an apprenticeship at Bertel Thorvaldsen , as claimed in older literature.

His first known work is three geniuses for the Arco della Pace  in Milan. Between 1838 and 1843 he participated several times in the exhibitions of the Accademia di Brera and presented numerous portraits, including one of the musician Franz Liszt, who was then living in Lombardy . Internationally known made him a statue of Susanna in the bath , which was awarded a gold medal at the world exhibition in London in 1851 and by Napoleon III. was bought.

He married Rosa Camelli around 1832 and the couple had their son Rizzardo (* 1836), who also became a sculptor, and their daughters Emilia (* 1838) and Amalia (* 1842).

Galli's early works are in the style of classicism , but he soon turned away from it and turned to romantic naturalism . This can be seen in the representation of the facial features, the clothing and the pose of the figures shown. He created mythological, allegorical and religious statues and reliefs, portrait statues and busts, mainly in marble. His works include monuments in public spaces and several statues for the Milan Cathedral . He often dealt with unusual subjects. His representations, which deviated from conventional iconography , met with opposition from conservative critics.
