Risorgimento
Luciano Manara distinguished himself in 1848 in the five-day popular uprising against Austrian rule in Milan . There he conquered the Porta Tosa (today Porta Vittoria ) at the head of insurgents . Immediately afterwards he took part in the first Italian war of unification , in which he first led a volunteer association, then a regular Piedmontese Bersaglieri unit. He then took part in the defense of the Roman Republic and became Garibaldi's chief of staff . Manara fell on June 30, 1849 while fighting French troops in Rome .
Only after years of requests from relatives did the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I allow Manara's burial in his Lombard homeland in 1853 , whereby the public was excluded ex officio.
