Alberto da Giussano ( Lombardy , 12th century) was a legendary leader of the Lombard League .

origin

Alberto da Giussano's origin and life are controversial. It is believed that he came from the Lombard town of Giussano or held a public office there.

Legnano

Alberto da Giussano allegedly took part in the Battle of Legnano on May 29, 1176 , in which, according to legend, he and his company defended the Carroccio , a war chariot, against the soldiers of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa . Due to the importance of the Carroccio , he may have been a military commander of the Lombards.

Modern

Alberto da Giussano later became a symbol for the liberation of Italy from foreign rule. He was especially transfigured during the Risorgimento and also during fascism .

The Italian navy named a light cruiser after him in 1930 , the army had him between 1934 and 1997 on the coats of arms of associations that bore the name "Legnano".

The bicycle manufacturer Legnano featured it in its company logo.

Today it is of particular importance for the northern Italian regional party Lega Nord , on whose coat of arms it can be seen. For the Lega and its supporters, it stands for resistance against centralism and Roman paternalism.

In Legnano , the Palio di Legnano takes place every year at the end of May , a folk festival with a costume parade and horse races that commemorate the battle and Alberto da Giussano. The city also erected a monument to him.
