Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo
Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo († 87 BC ) was a politician of the late Roman Republic from the rural Picenum region . He became the first of his branch of the Pompeii family to become senator in Rome - despite the prejudice of the Senate against homines novi . In the alliance war he fought in 90 BC. BC as a legacy under the consul Publius Rutilius Lupus . Strabo began with the siege of Asculum , which he also served as consul for the following year 90 BC. Continued. He commanded the Roman forces against the Italian allies in the northern theater of war. His three legions were crucial to Rome's victory. After the end of the war, Strabo and most of his veterans retired to Picenum as proconsul . The consul of the year 88 BC BC, Quintus Pompeius Rufus , was killed while trying to take command of Strabo's troops. 87 BC Chr. Strabo Sulla's request for help against Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Cinna followed. He besieged Rome but died before a battle was fought. There are numerous versions of his death. It is most likely that he contracted a plague (according to another description he was struck by lightning). Strabo's son Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus led his legions back to Picenum.
The cities of Alba Pompeia and Laus Pompeia were named after him.
