Publius Rutilius Lupus (Consul)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Rutilius Lupus († June 10, 90 BC at Carsioli on Tolenus ) was a Roman politician of the late Republic .

The son and grandson of a Lucius Rutilius should have held the praetur in 93 at the latest . Shortly after the outbreak of the alliance war , he became consul in 90 BC. Chr. Rutilius took command in the northern theater of war, while his colleague Lucius Iulius Caesar was commander in chief in the south.

Under Rutilius a few experienced generals served as legates . Rutilius disregarded the advice of his experienced legate and relative Gaius Marius (the victor over Jugurtha , Cimbri and Teutons ) to train the troops first and drag out the war. After his legate Gaius Perperna was defeated, he deposed him and put himself at the head of part of the army. While trying to relieve Alba Fucens , he was ambushed and killed by the Martians under Vettius Scato near Carsioli in the Tolenus Valley. After the consul's death, Marius was able to push back the opponents and recover Rutilius' body, which was brought to Rome for burial.

The later tribune (57/56 BC) and praetor (49 BC) Publius Rutilius Lupus was probably his son.
