Hannibal Marchese di Sommariva (born March 10, 1755 in Lodi , † July 10, 1829 in Vienna ) was an Austrian general of Italian descent.

Life

Hannibal Sommariva came from a respected noble Lombard family. He was educated at the Collegio dei Nobili in Milan and began his military career as early as 1771 by joining a Uhlan regiment . He took part in the campaign against Prussia in 1778 and in the Turkish Wars from 1787–1789 . He distinguished himself in the First Coalition War and in 1796 became a colonel and commander of the 8th Uhlan Regiment . In 1799 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order by Magnano and promoted to major general. In 1800 he became governor general of the Tuscan provinces. In 1801 and 1805 he fought in Italy and in 1807 became a field marshal lieutenant and military commander in Opava . In 1809 he commanded a division and took part in the battle of Eckmühl . The next few years took him to Moravia and Hungary . In 1814 he took possession of the Italian territories in Milan as imperial commissioner. In 1817 he was appointed general of the cavalry and in 1820 as commanding general in Vienna. A special honor was the appointment as captain of the satellite body guard and the Hofburgwache in 1825. From 1806 he was the owner of the cuirassier regiment No. 5 , in 1816 he received the order of the Iron Crown 1st class and was appointed privy councilor. His bones rest in a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 0, No. 35).
