An animal hospital or veterinary clinic in Austria private animal hospital is a veterinary facility to care for sick animals. It must guarantee constant availability. There is usually a specialization in small animals, horses or farm animals.

Germany

Except for the clinics of public institutions (e.g. those of the veterinary training centers ), the requirements for the use of the designation are regulated by the professional code of the competent veterinary chamber . The latter is also responsible for checking compliance with the minimum standards. Since March 2013, is one on the Assembly of Delegates of the Federal Veterinary Chamber decided pattern clinic Directive . According to it, at least three veterinarians , including at least one relevant specialist veterinarian , and four auxiliary staff, including two veterinary assistants, must be employed. Space and equipment requirements are also regulated. In contrast to a veterinary practice , at least two operating rooms , x-rays , sonography , endoscopy , EKG , inhalation anesthesia including anesthesia monitoring ( pulse oximetry , capnometry ), instruments for osteosynthesis , eye examinations and dental treatments as well as a laboratory including a blood gas analyzer are expected for a small animal clinic . An equine clinic must have x-rays, sonography, EKG, arthroscopy and its own laboratory, as well as an operating room with lifting equipment, at least eight horse stalls and an outlet.

In 2012 there were 294 veterinary clinics in Germany, of which only 14 were for farm animals. While most veterinary clinics are owner-managed, clinic chains such as Anicura have recently become increasingly active in the German market. However, third-party ownership of veterinary clinics and veterinary practices and thus opening up to investors is viewed critically and is not allowed in some federal states.

Austria

In Austria, the ordination guidelines of the Austrian Chamber of Veterinarians regulate the requirements for a veterinary hospital. In contrast to a normal ordination, x-rays, inhalation anesthesia, a laboratory, a separate operating room, a ward for at least five animals and an isolation room are required. In a private animal hospital, at least two veterinarians and two assistants must be fully employed.

Switzerland

The term veterinary clinic is not protected in Switzerland. Only the university animal clinics in Bern and Zurich are referred to as animal hospitals.
