The devastating losses caused by the rinderpest and the need for expert care for the horses of the cavalry led to the establishment of the first veterinary training centers at the end of the 18th century: in 1761 in Lyon ( École Vétérinaire de Lyon , now part of the University of Lyon ) and in 1766 in Maisons- Alfort ( École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort ).
The oldest university of veterinary medicine in German-speaking countries is the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, founded in 1767 . Some veterinary training centers founded in the following years only existed for a few years or decades, for example in Göttingen (1771–1777), Marburg (1788–1833), Würzburg (1791–1869), Schwerin (1812–1843), Jena (1816–1846) and Stuttgart (1821-1912).
The oldest, still existing, independent, veterinary university in Germany is the one in 1778 under the reign of George III. The Berlin University of Veterinary Medicine , founded in 1787 as a veterinary school and opened in 1790, had existed since 1889 and was incorporated into the Friedrich Wilhelms University in 1934 with the Berlin University of Agriculture . Today it belongs to the Free University of Berlin . The Dresden University of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1889, had a private veterinary training institute as its predecessor from 1774, which was transferred to the Dresden Veterinary School in 1780 and finally incorporated into the University of Leipzig as the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1923 . The Royal University of Veterinary Medicine, Munich was founded in 1890, emerged from the Thier-Arzney-Schule , which had existed since 1790 , from 1810 the Royal Central Veterinary School , from 1852 the Royal Central Veterinary School in Munich and in 1914 joined the Ludwig-Maximilians School as a veterinary faculty.
