Angela von den Driesch

Angela von den Driesch (born July 11, 1934 in Dresden ; † January 4, 2012 in Munich ) was a German archaeozoologist , university professor and non-fiction author .

Life and professional history

Angela von den Driesch completed her habilitation in 1972 with the thesis "Osteoarchaeological Investigations on the Iberian Peninsula" in the field of veterinary medicine at the University of Munich , where she worked as a professor for paleoanatomy, domestication research and the history of veterinary medicine. From 1993 to 2000 she was Joachim Boessneck's successor on the board of directors of the "Institute for Paleoanatomy and History of Veterinary Medicine".

Von den Driesch was an internationally respected specialist in the field of archeozoology. In this role she accompanied archaeological excavations on the Iberian Peninsula, in the Alpine region, in Anatolia, Egypt and Tunisia. She did research not only to determine the zoological find complexes, but also to the history of veterinary medicine, domestication and related topics. Their studies ranged from investigations of Stone Age finds to finds from the Mediterranean high cultures to studies of the Middle Ages.

Angela von den Driesch was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . The commemorative publication “Historia animalium ex ossibus. Contributions to paleoanatomy, archeology, Egyptology, ethnology and the history of veterinary medicine ”.
