Günther Michel

Günther Helmut Michel (born August 22, 1928 in Weißendorf near Triebes; † March 19, 2017 ibid) was a German veterinarian , histologist , embryologist and professor at the University of Leipzig .

Life

After a short period as a prisoner of war, Michel first completed an agricultural apprenticeship and then studied veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1948 to 1953. He then entered the Veterinary Anatomical Institute. In 1954 he received his doctorate with a thesis on salivary glands in golden hamsters , in 1962 he obtained his habilitation with the text " The structure of the heart of domestic and wild boars: with special consideration of the stimulation and stimulation conduction system ". In the same year he became a lecturer and in 1969 a full professor of histology and embryology at the Veterinary Anatomical Institute of Leipzig University. With the re-establishment of the Veterinary Faculty in 1990, he became director of the institute and also vice dean for study matters.

In 1993 Michel retired , but remained loyal to the Leipzig faculty well into his old age and gave lectures on the history of veterinary medicine and was also instrumental in building up the faculty's historical collection. In addition, Michel was a member of the board of directors of the Friends of the Veterinary Faculty for around 20 years and was made an honorary member of the Freundeskreis in 2010. In his spare time he played table tennis.

Michel was the author or co-author of several textbooks. His Compendium of Pet Embryology went through four editions and has been translated into several languages.
