History and sights

Originally part of the municipality of the Valle Averara as Contrada della "Squadra di Sopra" , Cassiglio became an independent municipality in 1647 with 300 inhabitants. From 1810 to 1812 Cassiglio was united with Cusio. In the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto , the population rose to 377 (1853). The census after the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 showed 429 inhabitants. Thereafter, a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants can be observed (Censimento 1936: 185). The census of 1951 shows a temporary slight increase in the population with 228. By 2008 the number of residents had been reduced by almost half. The municipal council consists of twelve members who all belonged to a list of citizens ( Lista civica ) in the 2004 elections .

On the outer wall of the parish church of San Bartolomeo there is a dance of death from the second half of the 15th century, which is attributed to Angelo Baschenis . Another depiction of the dance of death from around 1700 can be found alongside other frescoes at Casa Milesi .

According to local tradition, the dead at the Passo di Baciamorti were greeted by their relatives for the last time before they were buried on the old connecting path into Val Taleggio .
