history

The community was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century. It was granted privileges in the 15th century. The place belonged to the possession of the Bentivoglio . Although the municipality had only 650 inhabitants in the middle of the 18th century, the municipal administration had a chancellor and three archive clerks in addition to the three deputati who were elected by the 24 members of the inner council. Barbata with 104 inhabitants was connected to Antegnate. In the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy , the number of inhabitants rose to 1132. In 1810 the place was united with Covo, in 1812 the seat of the administration was moved to Antegnate. In the Habsburg Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto , the number of inhabitants rose to 1,800 (1853). The census when the Kingdom of Italy was founded in 1861 was 2,046. The population continued to grow until 1951 (2,635 residents), and has since declined. In the meantime, there has been another increase.
