Leonid Alexejewitsch Skotnikow

Leonid Alexejewitsch Skotnikov ( Russian Леонид Алексеевич Скотников , scientific transliteration Leonid Alekseevič Skotnikov ; born March 26, 1951 in Kalinin , USSR ) is a Russian lawyer and diplomat . From 2006 to 2015 he served as a judge at the International Court of Justice .

Life

After studying law at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations , the specialist in international law worked at various institutes in Russia. For most of his career he worked in the legal department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. From 1974 he worked in various positions in the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union . From 1992 to 1998 he was Russia's ambassador to the Netherlands. From 1992 and 1998 to 2001 he headed the legal department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. From 2001 to 2005 he was Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva . He eventually taught at Moscow and Harvard Universities .

After having been a member of several international legal bodies for many years, he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in November 2005 , where he served from February 2006 to February 2015. He was also selected as an ad hoc judge on two occasions.
