Ugo Colombo (born February 22, 1940 in San Giorgio su Legnano , † October 10, 2019 in Pontremoli ) was an Italian road cyclist and sporting director in cycling.
Athletic career
Ugo Colombo was active as a cyclist for 19 years, from 1964 to 1974 as a professional . In most years, he acted as precious Gregario of Franco Bitossi team Filotex . He was seen as a shy and cautious driver who drove in races to serve the team and was therefore rarely able to play to his strengths.
Over the course of his cycling career, Colombo has made 13 major national tours and competed three times in the UCI Road World Championships . In the 1968 Tour de France he finished tenth, and at the Giro, he finished 1969 in fifth place and 1971 third place. He won three Giro stages, one stage of the Tour de Suisse and one stage of the Tour of Catalonia . In 1965 and 1970 he was fifth in the overall ranking of the Tour de Suisse, and in 1971 third. In 1970 and 1971 he won the Coppa Placci .
Colombo later described his victory at the 12th stage of the Giro in 1969 as the most beautiful moment of his career, as his most painful, as he drove past Tom Simpson's lifeless body in the 1967 Tour de France .
After the end of his active career, Colombo moved to Pontremoli, home of his wife, in 1976, and opened a bakery there. He was also involved in the Sic team , for which Giuseppe Saronni drove among others .
Ugo Colombo died at the age of 79 after a long and serious illness. He was buried in Scorcetoli .
