Bernhard Auinger
Bernhard Auinger (born February 21, 1982 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian racing driver . He is the son of the motorcycle racing driver August Auinger .
Career
Auinger began his motorsport career in 1997 in kart racing , in which he was active until 1998. He then moved into the single-seater racing and launched with the support of Red Bull in Formula König . After he finished eleventh overall in 1999, he won the championship title of this series in 2000 with two race wins. He also made his debut in the German Formula 3 championship , in which he competed in four races. In the next two years his main focus was on the German Formula 3 Championship, in which he finished eighth overall in 2002 after finishing 21st in the drivers' championship the previous year. He also took part in various Formula 3 races in the two years .
In 2003 Auinger switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series and became a team-mate of Sakon Yamamoto at Superfund TME . Auinger never made it onto the podium, but was fourth three times and finished 15th overall at the end of the season. In addition, the Austrian contested two races in the international Formula 3000 championship for the Red Bull Junior Team supervised by Coloni . The opportunity arose when Red Bull needed a replacement driver for his compatriot Patrick Friesacher , who had to take a break with a broken arm. In the drivers' championship of the 2003 season, he finished 19th.
In 2004 he switched to the Superfund Euro Formula 3000 for the Italian racing team Euronova Racing . Since he was no longer sponsored by Red Bull, Auinger initially only had the financial means to take part in the first two races. But his team manager, former Formula 1 -Pilot Vincenzo Sospiri appreciate the Austrians as a good driver and held on to him. Auinger did not disappoint the expectations of his team boss and he won the race in Spa-Francorchamps . At the end of the season, he finished fifth in the drivers' championship. In 2005 he contested his second season in this championship, which was now called the Italian Formula 3000 . Starting for Sighinolfi Autoracing , he could not build on the successes from the previous season and only finished 13th overall at the end of the season. He had to skip two races.
In 2006 Auinger wanted to leave formula racing and compete in a touring car racing series. However, his involvement in the DTM failed because a sponsor had dropped out. The Austrian then ended his career for the time being and returned to motorsport in 2008, where he competed in a race in the FIA GT Championship . In 2009 he won the championship title in the Austrian Suzuki Motorsport Cup .
