Career

After dropping out of regular school, Claude Gensac attended the Cours Simon drama school and then the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique , which she graduated in 1947. In 1952 she played a maid in her first movie La Vie d'un honnête homme . The then little-known Louis de Funès played a valet in the film.

Gensac gained international fame from the late 1960s as a comedy partner of de Funès, where she often played his wife. Between 1967 and 1982 she acted in ten de Funès films. With her tall figure and her elegant, ladylike restraint, Gensac was a counterpart to the stocky, choleric de Funès. In the Saint Tropez comedies with de Funès, Gensac was dubbed by the German actress Tilly Lauenstein .

After Funès' death in 1983, Gensac barely received any film roles, but was active as a stage actress. In 2001 she played the role of mother in the French cinema version of Absolutely Fabulous for the first time since 1987 (Poule et frites) again in a cinema role. Then she took on numerous cinema and television roles again. In 2013 Gensac played Madame recommends the annoying mother of Catherine Deneuve and in 2015 she was nominated for César for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Martha in Quicksand (2013) . She played her last film role in the film Nos années folles, which was announced for 2017 .

Gensac played a total of over 100 cinema and television films, as well as numerous theater roles. In 2011 she was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres with the rank of officer.

There is a son from the marriage. Claude Gensac lived in Neuilly-sur-Seine , and since 1989 she has owned a country house in Normandy .
