action

Lucie, called Lulu, is a mother of three and in an unhappy marriage to the violent, dominant Serge. She went to the small coastal town of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie for an interview as a secretary , but was turned down there. Her husband makes it clear on the phone that he didn't expect anything else. She deliberately missed the train home near Angers and took a hotel room for one night. She doesn't return home the next day either, because she forgot her wedding ring in the hotel. She decides to take a break for several days, which she tells her worried sister. Shortly afterwards, she discovers that her husband has blocked her credit card - allegedly because it was stolen.

On the beach, Lulu meets Charles, in front of whom she pretends to be single and occasionally travels the country for fun. He soon realizes that she has no more money and invites her to his home. His home is on a campsite that he manages with his two brothers. After she has stayed with him for one night, he puts her in her own camper van. Both get closer and finally sleep together. Lulu's sister Cécile suspects that she has a boyfriend and comes to the campsite. Charles' brothers intercept her as they are glad to see their brother happy and in love. She tells both that Lulu has a husband and three children who need them. The brothers in turn tell Cécile that Charles spent four months in prison and has only been free again for three weeks. The next day, Lulu's daughter Morgane appears in town and watches with Cécile Lulu on the beach with Charles. Both do not reveal themselves, but Lulu finds her sleeping in a trailer. She hitchhiked her head over heels.

Lulu ends up in an area unknown to her. She spends the night in a shopping center and the next morning tries to steal old Marthe's handbag. After a short while she brings the bag back to her and accompanies her home. The two women become friends and Marthe asks Lulu a favor: she should go see her former close friend Yvette for her, with whom she wants to reconcile in old age. Lulu finds out that Yvette died three years ago, but pretends to Marthe that she met Yvette and that she forgave Marthe. Marthe is happy. In a café, Lulu sees the young waitress Virginie, who is being harassed by her boss. She wins Virginie's trust and, with Marthe's help, helps her find the strength to quit working in the café and fulfill her lifelong dream of going to Paris .

Lulu decides to return home. Shortly before leaving, Marthe finds out that Yvette could no longer forgive her and is angry and disappointed with Lulu. When she wants to hitchhike back to Angers, Marthe picks her up in her car. She has decided to go with Lulu so that one day she won't die alone like Yvette did. Only Morgane is there on arrival at home. Cécile offers to come to Lulu by phone before Serge arrives, but Lulu refuses. When Serge appears in the evening, he is angry. He hits Lulu, who collapses motionless. The sight of her causes Marthe to have a heart attack. Lulu survives and throws Serge out, while Marthe dies. She is buried shortly thereafter, with Morgane getting all of her classmates to attend the funeral. A little later, Charles, to whom Lulu wrote a postcard, appears in town. He knows about Lulu's family, but loves them too much to give them up. In the garden of the house he meets Morgane. Lulu went away for a moment, but will be back soon. Morgane allows him to wait for her.
