Jean Girault

Jean Girault (born May 9, 1924 in Villenauxe-la-Grande , † July 24, 1982 in Paris ) was a French film director and screenwriter .

Career

After graduating from school, he attended the École des Travaux and played as a musician in Eddie Barclay's orchestra . In 1946 he was double bass player with Claude Luther when he became assistant director to Marcel Blistène . Already in that year he directed two short films of his own, in 1956 a documentary about Christian-Jaque followed .

From 1951 to 1960 he worked as a screenwriter, mainly for film comedies . He made his film debut as a director in 1960. In 1962 he met the then little-known supporting actor Louis de Funès and had worked with him since 1963. The success of The Gendarme of St. Tropez led to five sequels. He also worked with Jean Gabin and Dieter Hallervorden .

Despite these successes, he received little attention as a director. Jean Girault died during the filming of Never Play Clever Again on tuberculosis . It was his twelfth collaboration with Louis de Funès.
