Baldwin, also known as Louis the philanderer or the gendarme marries , is a French comedy film directed by Jean Girault from 1968 with Louis de Funès in the lead role. It is the third of a total of six films about the gendarmes from Saint-Tropez . The filming locations were Saint-Tropez and other locations in the Var department . The film opened in German cinemas on March 13, 1970.
action
Gendarme Ludovic Cruchot (in the German dubbed version Balduin ) from Saint Tropez pursues a car driver for exceeding her speed. When he poses them, mutual sympathies arise. He learns that her name is Josepha and that she is the widow of a high official and friend of Charles de Gaulle , which increases his subservience to her. He decides to court her, but to hide the real age of his 20-year-old daughter Nicole and instead pass her off as a preschool girl in order to rejuvenate herself a little. However, when the two women meet, the truth emerges. In an inter-scene, Cruchot manages to arrest the criminal Friedo the butcher.
Later, Cruchot and his superior Gerber apply for the rank of Adjudant-Chef ( Oberwachtmeister in the German dubbed version ). During the exam, Cruchot was unable to adequately answer the questions, but was declared the winner due to an oversight by the examination board - to Gerber's annoyance. Cruchot then takes over the management of Gerber's territory, which causes Cruchot to tease his previous boss. The latter reluctantly accepts the new situation. When the error finally emerges, the situation changes again - this time to Gerber's satisfaction, which he lets the now degraded and emphatically submissive Cruchot feel. During a diving exercise by the gendarmerie, Cruchot sinks to the bottom of the sea and therefore falls ill, so that Nicole and Josepha have to take care of the gendarme, who only talks strange things. On the way home, Josepha is kidnapped by the escaped Friedo the butcher to bait Cruchot. Due to a mistake, however, this is confused with Gerber, who arrives instead of Cruchot. After a long chase, in which Cruchot and Gerber as well as the rest of the gendarmes and sister Clotilde were involved, Friedo was arrested again and Josepha was rescued. In the end, Cruchot and Josepha get married and he is promoted to adjudant-chef, which is not taken into account in the subsequent films.

Reviews
“ The gendarme from St. Tropez [...] offers a really poor performance: flat gags and lots of grimaces. Conclusion: Undemanding grimace slapstick "
"Thinner than the average of the Funès series."
“A poor script resulted in a poor film that even Louis de Funès cannot save. Tolerable for steadfast friends of the French comedian. "
