Madame recommends (original title: Elle s'en va ) is a French feature film by the director Emmanuelle Bercot from 2013. It is about a woman who breaks out of her everyday life and at the end, thanks to a trip through France, a new love for a man from your own family. It had its premiere in the competition at the 63rd Berlinale .

action

Bettie, early 60s and once "Miss Bretagne", lives and works with her mother in a restaurant. However, financial difficulties and her mother's great interest in Bettie's private life weigh on them. It hits her hard when her mother tells her - it seems Bettie - with badly hidden joy that the man with whom Bettie has had a long affair has found a new, much younger lover. During a trip in the car, which was originally only intended for buying cigarettes, but then takes longer and longer, Bettie encounters people in a different milieu and moves further and further away from her previous life, spatially and emotionally.

While she is still on the road, Bettie's daughter calls and asks her to take her son Charly, Bettie's grandson, to see her father-in-law Alain. Bettie agrees spontaneously. Grandmother and grandchildren find a good relationship with each other after several difficult situations on the journey. Bettie takes Charly to a photo shoot with other former regional beauty queens. After suffering a fit of weakness there, she can no longer drive the car and Alain has to come to pick up Charly, which annoys him very much. Since Bettie does not want to leave her grandson alone under these circumstances, she goes with them. When the other family members arrive there too, a debate takes place. Finally, Bettie falls in love with Alain and realizes: "Life goes on".

background

The film was shown on February 15 and 16, 2013 as part of the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival .

Reviews

Elle s'en va seems restless in search of a style, switches from one musical genre to the next as if it were a competition, cuts back and forth, lines perspective after perspective as if none were the right one. Bercot formally imitates the shaky lifestyle of the smoker who leaves her life behind to find it again. "
