Günther von Bartensleben

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Günther von Bartensleben (* 1405 ; † 1453 ) was lord of the castle on Wolfsburg and together with his brother Günzel and their father he founded the Marienkapelle in Alt-Wolfsburg , in the immediate vicinity of the castle.

Life

Von Bartensleben was the son of Günzel VI. von Bartensleben and his wife Kunigunde Gans zu Putlitz. His brother was Günzel VII., Canon of Magdeburg , Halberstadt and Hildesheim and provost of Salzwedel . He was the heir to the Wolfsburg rule, which was founded by his ancestor Günzel and his brothers Burchard , Günther and Werner. Since his brother Günzel held a clerical office, it was up to him to look after male descendants. In 1426 he married a daughter of the von Bülow family, with whom he had a son Jakob and a daughter Kunigunde. After the death of his wife in 1434 he took Sophie von Alvensleben as his wife. From this marriage came four more children, Armgard, Busso, Hans and Gertrud.

On June 17, 1434, the brothers were present at the consecration of the Marienkapelle donated by them and their father by a vicar of the Bishop of Halberstadt in Alt-Wolfsburg. Her father died a short time later. As a precautionary measure, Günther, as the heir to the rulership, promised his liege lord, Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg and the city council of Braunschweig , a quarter of Wolfsburg if he should die himself without a fiefdom heir. This did not happen and his three sons continued the line. His tombstone is in the Bartensleben chapel of the Marienthal monastery.
