Jean David Benguigui (born April 8, 1944 in Oran , Algeria ) is a French theater and film actor .

Life

Benguigui was born in Oran in 1944 as the son of Algerian Jews. At the age of 14 he saw a performance of Molière's Tartuffe in his hometown and decided to become an actor. When the French underground movement OAS tried to recruit him shortly before his 18th birthday, he went to Toulouse . His parents Jean and Nelly (née Abécassis) and his older brother Pierre (* 1938) stayed in Algeria.

In 1966, Benguigui began his professional career as a stage actor. Under the direction of Patrice Chéreau he was used several times on stage. In 1967 Benguigui stood in front of the film camera for the first time for the short film Vampirisme . From the 1970s he was seen in numerous film and television productions, working under the direction of well-known directors such as Bertrand Blier , Philippe de Broca , Claude Zidi , Claude Chabrol and Claude Lelouch . Mostly set to the Mediterranean type, he often appears in comical supporting roles, such as in Die Flugigen (1986) alongside Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu . He and Isabelle Huppert have been in front of the camera several times, such as in Chabrol's 1997 crook comedy Life is a game . In the comic films Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002) and The Daltons against Lucky Luke (2004) Benguigui again played small supporting roles. In France he also works as a voice actor. He lent his voice to Joe Pesci , among others . In 2014 he published the autobiographical book Un parfum d'orange amère .

Jean Benguigui is the father of the actress Catherine Benguigui (* 1964) and the singer Antoine Léonpaul (1975).
