The children's film I, Caesar. 10 ½ years old, 1.39 meters tall is a French comedy film from 2003.

action

Caesar Klein is 10 ½ years old and 1 meter 39 tall. He is shy and five kilograms overweight. The exact opposite of that is his best friend Morgan, who is tall and brave. Morgan doesn't know his father, however, and both boys are in love with Sarah, the prettiest girl in school. Caesar does everything to please Sarah.

Since the police were with the Klein family to inquire about the business of the late partner of Caesar's father, Caesar suspects that his father had to go to prison when he suddenly left. When he told this at school, all the children thought he was particularly "cool". As a result, his grades also improve. When his father reappears, the mistake is exposed, and Caesar is avoided in school even more than before.

Morgan decides to look for his father in England. Sarah and Caesar accompany him. With the help of the French restaurant owner Gloria, they manage to find Morgan's father. During the adventurous search, Caesar proves how brave he is, and so Sarah finally falls in love with him.

Summary

construction

As tvtv.de points out, the film is structured in an epic narrative form with Caesar as the first-person narrator. He tells the story from his happy and yet thoughtful perspective. In addition, the film holds adults up to a mirror that does not let them appear in the best possible light.

The emotional state of the main actor Caesar is made clear at some points in the film by quite unusual images and transitions. The film begins with the funeral of Caesar's father's business partner. When it starts to rain, everyone gradually opens their black umbrellas, which is shown from an aerial perspective. Out of the multitude of black umbrellas, a colorful umbrella stands out, which is opened last. This melts into a dark mass that becomes a toilet bowl that Caesar pees into.

people

Caesar tries in his own way to see through the adult world. They never explain anything to him properly and are preoccupied with their own problems. Then there are his own problems that he has as an adolescent with his personality development and his first love.

Morgan is - or so it seems - the born winner. He is big, brave and popular. But the search for his father shows that he too is vulnerable.

Sarah notices very quickly the influence she has on boys and at first takes advantage of it. At first she feels more attracted to Morgan, but then realizes Caesar's strengths of character.

Reviews

David Nusair describes the film as a kind of The Fabulous World of Amélie for adolescents. The film would masterfully balance drama and comedy. American parents may be confused, however, because Caesar has a penchant for strong expressions.

Festivals
