Silent Witness , formerly coroner Dr. Leo Dalton , previously coroner Dr. Samantha Ryan is a television series produced by the BBC since 1996 , which was broadcast by RTL in Germany from 2000 to 2005 and 2008 . 2,012 new episodes of were pay-TV transmitter Fox Channel sent. Since 2014, the German premiere has been from the 15th season on ZDFneo .
The 22nd season was performed in the UK in early 2019.
In Great Britain all episodes are divided into two parts, while in Germany every episode is broadcast in full length. The episodes of seasons one to five have a running time of 90 minutes (shortened for German broadcasting). Since season six, the running time has been extended to 120 minutes.

After the main actress Amanda Burton left the series, the series title of forensic doctor Dr. Samantha Ryan in Coroner Dr. Leo Dalton to be renamed. Since the start of season 13, the series has also been broadcast in Germany under the original title Silent Witness .

The series is about solving the deaths of people in which the coroners not only support the police, but are often involved in the investigation themselves. It is characteristic of the series that - in contrast to other series - several cases are processed in parallel by the pathologists and shown to the viewer. These cases are only sometimes linked.
Dr. Samantha Ryan was the chief medical examiner until she quit her job to return to her home in Belfast. Dr. Leo Dalton then took over her post. As a result, Dr. Nikki Alexander hired to have three pathologists on the team again.
Dr. Leo Dalton is ordered to Afghanistan for the last episode of the 16th season . When he meets a friend there again, he turns out to be a suicide bomber who has strapped a bomb around his body. When the bomb detonates, Dr. Leo Dalton killed.

Television broadcast
The series first aired in the UK in February 1996. The broadcast of the first nine seasons in Germany took place from June 2000 on RTL. Although the series achieved high ratings not only in Great Britain but also in Germany (in the eighth season, however, the audience interest in Germany decreased), it is only shown to the German audience at very irregular intervals. Between September 2005 and April 2008, no new episodes were shown in Germany. After the broadcast of the 9th season, there was another four-year break from August 2008. In 2012, the 13th and 14th seasons were performed by the pay TV channel FOX . It is currently unknown when seasons 10–12 will be broadcast. Seasons 15 to 21 have been shown on ZDFneo since July 17, 2014 . The 22nd season was broadcast as a night marathon on a weekend from January 24, 2020 on ZDFneo.

So far, in Germany, the episodes of season 1 have been individually referred to as forensic doctor Dr. Samantha Ryan plus the next title, seasons 2 to 7 under coroner Dr. Samantha Ryan plus season number, seasons 8, 9, 13 and 14 under the title Silent Witness - Forensic Doctor Dr. Leo Dalton released on DVD.
