In the early 1980s, Amanda Burton got her first role in the British soap opera Brookside , which first aired on November 2, 1982. Burton played Heather Haversham for more than three years and gained great fame in Great Britain. After leaving Brookside in 1985, the actress appeared in numerous British television series as a guest actress, for example in the series Inspector Morse and Van der Valk and in 1986 alongside Michael Elphik as a private detective in several episodes of the crime series Boon .

1990s: breakthrough

In the early 1990s, Amanda Burton was re-selected for a leading role in a British television series. The doctor series, first broadcast in 1993, revolved around the character portrayed by Burton, Dr. Beth Glover and their colleagues, played by Kevin Whately and Simon Shepherd , and showed everyday life in a family doctor's practice in the fictional small town of Cardale in the county of Derbyshire . The great success of the series with the audience meant for Burton the final breakthrough as an actress and great fame with the audience. Still, both she and Kevin Whately, who played her husband, left production after just three seasons. Peak Practice itself was successfully broadcast on British television until 2002.

After Amanda Burton left Peak Practice , she was offered a leading role as a medic shortly thereafter. For the BBC from 1995 she played the role of pathologist Dr. Samantha Ryan (later professor) in front of the camera. The series Silent Witness was broadcast in Great Britain from February 1996 and achieved high ratings. In non-English-speaking countries such as Sweden, Norway and France, Silent Witness was also broadcast with great success, from 2000 also in Germany under the title of forensic doctor Dr. Samantha Ryan . The success of the series meant the international breakthrough for lead actress Amanda Burton.

From 2000: TV films and cinema

After a first minor role in a TV movie in 1989, Amanda Burton was only seen again in 1998 in a BBC film. In The Gift she plays a mother suffering from cancer who tries to hide her illness from her family in order to enable her children to lead a carefree life.

From the turn of the millennium, the actress was seen increasingly in TV films alongside her work as a series actress. In 2001 Amanda Burton was seen with two films on British television. In fleeing from the past, she felt as a mother owned the alleged murderer of her daughter and tried to destroy his life. In treason for life and death , as a bank employee, she gave the police information about dubious transactions by her employer and, together with her family, had to leave her previous life behind in the witness protection program.

In the three-part film adaptation of Frances Fyfield's Helen West novels , Amanda Burton slipped into the role of the eponymous criminal lawyer in 2002. In 2003 she stood in front of the camera in a film adaptation of the classic children's book Pollyanna for ITV . The story takes place at the beginning of the 20th century ; the role of Aunt Polly was Amanda Burton's first historical role.

That same year, the actress first appeared in Lynda LaPlantes The Commander . As Commander Clare Blake , she had to find her way around a male domain at New Scotland Yard and solve crimes. In this role, Amanda Burton starred in seven films until 2009. Critics compare this role to Helen Mirren's in Prime Suspect , but both LaPlante and Amanda Burton deny it; apart from LaPlante as a writer, the two characters have nothing in common. After over seven years in the role of Sam Ryan , Burton left Silent Witness in 2003 as it became very busy working on The Commander .

In 2009 the actress stood in front of the camera for the first time for a movie. She played in the biopic Bronson the mother of the criminal Charles Bronson , played by Tom Hardy .

In 2010, Amanda Burton took on another lead role in a British television series. In the BBC series Waterloo Road , which has been successful since 2006 , she played the new headmistress of the title-giving high school for one year. As Karen Fisher , she first had to struggle with the disappearance of her eldest daughter and later with the separation from her husband, as well as the planned closure of the school. After only one season, Amanda Burton left the series at her own request. This was followed by a few television appearances and a role in a short film.
