Battle of the Sexes - The Titans (original title Battle of the Sexes ., English for "Battle of the Sexes") is a British-American film biography of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris , the on September 2, 2017 at the Telluride Film Festival their It premiered and was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival from September 11, 2017 . The film tells about tennis player Billie Jean King , including a match against her male colleague Bobby Riggs in 1973.

action

After winning the US Open in 1972, Billie Jean King called for the prize money to be raised in women's tournaments, which were many times lower than those for men. When Jack Kramer , the manager of the tennis tour, does not respond, she and Gladys Heldman found the WTA , which starts its own series of tournaments. The participating players get new tennis clothes made by fashion designers who are also on the tour. For the first time, these are provided with colored elements. At the start of the tour, they also get a new haircut in a hairdressing salon. King meets the hairdresser Marilyn Barnett and invites her to a tournament. There they meet again, and King invites her to stay with her at the hotel. In doing so, they begin an intimate relationship. Marilyn can accompany the tour as a hairdresser. One day, Billie Jean's husband unexpectedly arrives at the hotel and assesses the situation correctly. Before leaving, he advises Marilyn not to stand between Billie Jean and "the tennis", whereupon she also leaves.

Meanwhile, the former world-class player Bobby Riggs, now 55 years old, sullenly follows King's successes on television. He's a chauvinist and notorious gambler, which is why his wife throws him out. He came up with the idea of challenging King to a tennis match in exchange for $ 30,000 to prove that males are superior to females and that women are only good for the kitchen and bedroom. After King refuses him, he makes the same offer to Margaret Smith Court , who replaces King as the world's best tennis player the next day. Court accepts it - and clearly loses the match, to the horror of King and her colleagues. King wants to make up for this shame and accepts another offer from Riggs for a "battle of the sexes", in which the winner can be bet. Riggs, who is sure of victory, markets the match with his show appearances. Instead of exercising, he relies on “miracle drinks” and vitamin pills while King prepares with concentration. The game takes place with a large show spectacle in front of 30,000 spectators and is broadcast by television stations worldwide. Shortly before the start, King rejected Jack Kramer, who was supposed to act as a television expert alongside her colleague Rosie Casals . At the last moment Marilyn arrives, who cuts her friend's hair again and gives her moral support. After initial problems, King clearly wins the match and is celebrated by the audience and her colleagues.

Biographical background

The film portrays tennis player Billie Jean King

In 1973, the former American tennis player Billie Jean King defeated the then 55-year-old Bobby Riggs in an exhibition match stylized as the Battle of the Sexes in front of over 30,000 spectators, the second-largest backdrop ever to have a tennis game. The media hype surrounding this game was huge, and the 30,492 viewers at the Astrodome in Houston are still considered the US record. In total, around 90 million people worldwide were reached via television. To date, no match in tennis history has been followed live by so many people.

In 1974, King became a coach, becoming the first woman to coach a professional American tennis team. This consisted of both women and men. In 1975 the singer Elton John dedicated the song Philadelphia Freedom to her . King later served on the boards of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the National AIDS Fund . In 2000, the openly lesbian tennis player received the Capitol Award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for her commitment .

production

Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the script was written by Simon Beaufoy .

Emma Stone played the main role of tennis player Billie Jean King in the film. Steve Carell plays Bobby Riggs, who faced her as an opponent in an exhibition match in 1973. Elisabeth Shue plays Priscilla Wheelan.

The shooting took place in Los Angeles , among others , in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. The recordings were made analogously on film rolls. On closer inspection of the picture, the retro look is noticeable, according to Piet Bosse from tennis MAGAZIN , which is very pleasant on the eye: "The atmosphere of a bygone era is thus successfully conveyed." Linus Sandgren acted as cameraman .

The score was composed by Nicholas Britell . The soundtrack for the film comprises 26 pieces of music and was released as a download on September 22, 2017 and as a CD on October 20, 2017 . During the end credits of the film, the song If I Dare sung by Sara Bareilles can be heard, which the multi- Grammy- nominated singer-songwriter and pianist wrote with Britell. reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The statement of release states: “The film does not contain any dramatic scenes that could frighten preschoolers. Issues such as gambling addiction and homosexuality are treated sensitively. Tension arises primarily from the tennis tournaments and the women's struggle for equality . The latter will hardly be accessible to the youngest viewers, but it will not cause any impairments. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far won over 86 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

So says Peter Debruge of Variety , it was amazing to have to explore as many facets in this story, and the film do so in a way that it should appeal to both the audience that is old enough to remember the story , but also those who are curious to learn more about it.

Anke Sterneborg remarks in epd Film that it may be surprising at first glance that Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, in their third feature film after Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks - My fabulous girlfriend, are dedicated to a sporting event, but on closer inspection, this story also lives exactly the mixture of subversive weird humor, loving milieu drawing, musical drive and a fine sense for the absurdity of interpersonal relationships, which also vibrated through these films.

Fred Duran from Augsburger Allgemeine explains that the filmmakers told the story with a retrospective wink, clear sympathy distributions and a surprise-free plot construction. Nevertheless, the matter is quite entertaining, continues Duran, because Emma Stone plays her feminist hero character with a down-to-earth understatement, which is a nice contrast to Steve Carell's foolish macho demeanor.

Piet Bosse from tennis MAGAZIN explains that in this film, in contrast to the film Borg / McEnroe , which was released in the same year, the actual tennis match is not so much in focus. In Battle of the Sexes , what is in the foreground is what is vehemently fought for on the court and next to it, namely equality between men and women. Bosse continues: “Founding a women's tennis organization is one of King's steps, but it falls short in the film. Anyone who is not familiar with the history of tennis will not fully understand the importance of this historic hour. However, the fact that each player receives a symbolic dollar for founding is very well presented. Billie Jean King, the power woman, uses this aspect to show Kramer his limits in further arguments. "

The worldwide revenue from cinema screenings so far amounts to around 18 million US dollars.
