production

The music for the film Battle of the Sexes - Against every rule by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (original title Battle of the Sexes, English for "battle of the sexes") was composed by Nicholas Britell .

Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles contributed If I Dare to the soundtrack

The pop song If I Dare , which is the last song on the soundtrack, was written by him together with the multiple Grammy- nominated singer-songwriter and pianist Sara Bareilles , sung by her and played during the credits of the film.

Bareilles said: “Billie Jean is one of the greatest minds / leading figures of our time. Their courage, conviction, and willingness to take risks to make change are part of what makes them so strong. A crucial chapter of their story is so beautifully brought to life in the film, and it was an honor for me to help write about it. ”With the song, she and Britell hoped that Billie Jeans would represent tremendous resilience in the face of adversity and something of hers to capture wild drive and spirit, the singer continues. One line of the song reads: "If I dare to want this, to want more than I have / Then I dare to believe I'll have it in the end" (in the German translation "If I dare to want more, than I have / Then I dare to believe I'll have it in the end ”) and expresses King's passionate commitment to equal opportunities for women, both on and off the tennis court.

In the film, the former American tennis player Billie Jean King defeated the then 55-year-old Bobby Riggs in 1973 in an exhibition match, hyped up to become the Battle of the Sexes, in front of 30,492 spectators, the second-largest backdrop ever to have had a tennis game . In 1974, King became a coach, becoming the first woman to coach a professional American tennis team. This consisted of both women and men. In 1975 the singer Elton John dedicated the song Philadelphia Freedom to her. King later served on the boards of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the National AIDS Fund. In 2000, the openly lesbian tennis player received the Capitol Award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for her commitment

reception

Olivia Truffaut Wong of bustle.com says Sara Bareilles ' If I Dare was the perfect choice as an end-credits song for Battle of the Sexes , not only because the song was written for the film, but also because of the activism of the Singer reflect that of Billie Jean King . Bareilles is also a keen advocate of LGBT rights, a cause King has been campaigning for since her outing in 1998.

Mike Wass of idolator.com thinks that Bareilles could have entered the running for Best Song with If I Dare at the upcoming Academy Awards . Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter also counts this as a possible candidate, as does the score for the Battle of the Sexes itself. On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Nicholas Britell's work was on a shortlist from which the nominations in the category Best Film Music will be made during the Academy Awards and If I dare is in a pre-selection of 70 songs from which the nominations in the category Best Film Song will be determined.
