The film portrays the tennis player Billie Jean King .

Bareilles said: “Billie Jean is one of the greatest minds / leading figures of our time. Their courage, conviction, and willingness to take risks to make change are part of what makes them so strong. A crucial chapter of their story is so beautifully brought to life in the film, and it was an honor for me to help write about it. ”With the song, she and Britell hoped that Billie Jeans would represent tremendous resilience in the face of adversity and something of hers to capture wild drive and spirit, the singer continues. One line of the song reads: "If I dare to want this, to want more than I have / Then I dare to believe I'll have it in the end" (in the German translation "If I dare to want more, than I have / Then I dare to believe I'll have it in the end ”) and expresses King's passionate commitment to equal opportunities for women, both on and off the tennis court.
