action

Calvin Weir-Fields is a young writer who published a successful novel a few years earlier. But now he is in writer's block and therefore visits a therapist. Calvin also struggles to develop relationships with other people, the only one he meets regularly is his brother Harry. One night when he dreams of an unknown young woman, Calvin tells his therapist. He then gives him the task of writing a page about a person who accepts his dog Scotty, whom he actually bought to come into contact with people, as he is, namely extremely scared. The next night Calvin dreams again of the woman, who this time asks him in a dream if she can paint his dog. Calvin immediately wakes up and sits down at his typewriter.

He writes down the story of this woman and asks his brother Harry if he likes the beginning of his story. But Harry says that Calvin created an ideal for himself, which he admits, and says that Calvin practically fell in love with his fictional character and only writes to be with her.

While Calvin is writing the book, his dog Scotty keeps coming up to Calvin with clothes from a woman, which he collects in a drawer. Calvin also told his agent about his book and so he describes the love confession of the protagonist Ruby Tiffany Sparks to him before meeting him. He falls asleep over the typewriter. The next morning, however, he has to find out that his character is standing in his kitchen and that he has apparently actually experienced the entire story. So it has all the attributes that he described in his book.

Calvin now thinks he has gone mad and tries to find out about it at a meeting, but finds out that others can see Ruby too. He proudly wants to introduce her to his brother, who is afraid that she is a con man. Together, Harry and Calvin want to check whether a miracle really happened. To this end, Calvin writes in the book that Ruby speaks French, which she then does. It becomes clear that Calvin can dictate everything Ruby does. Harry then makes him promise to use this to his advantage.

During a weekend with Ruby at his mother's and her new husband's, Calvin behaves withdrawn. He cares little about Ruby and avoids contact with others. Ruby then wants more time to herself when they return home and also meets with other friends. Calvin, who actually wanted to put his new novel on hold, now takes it out and writes that Ruby longs for him. She calls him promptly, but from now on never leaves his side and is deeply saddened even about the briefest moments of separation. Calvin "continues to write about her feelings" but notes that this is not the Ruby he fell in love with, so he makes her "normal" again.

At a party at which Calvin is supposed to sell the film rights for his first book, he meets his ex-girlfriend Lila again, with whom he had got into a relationship crisis. She makes it clear to him that she has left him because he only falls in love with the ideals of a person that he sees in that person. So Lila just wanted to give him what he wanted, namely a relationship with his own head. After this argument, Calvin goes to find Ruby. He finds her in underwear in the pool with his competitor Langdon, also a writer who envies him. He angrily takes Ruby home and says that she embarrassed him. But Ruby accuses him of not being able to control everything and that he only loves one ideal of hers, but she has longed for more, whereupon Calvin emphasizes that he can control everything.

He sits down at the typewriter and shows Ruby that he is in full control of her. During this strange game, however, it also becomes clear to him that he can no longer live with this burden, but that he actually wants her freedom. After storming into the bedroom, Calvin writes that as soon as she walks through the front door Ruby will leave the past behind and be free. The next morning that last page of the novel is gone and Ruby is gone.

Calvin falls into deep grief. His brother encourages him to write the story to get over Ruby. Calvin fears that everyone will think he is crazy, but Harry notes that people will just think it's fiction. This is how Calvin writes his story and dedicates it to Ruby without giving a name. Like his first novel, the book was a great success.

One day while walking in the park with Scotty, he meets Ruby who is reading his book. But she can't remember their time together and so Calvin sits down with her.

Reviews

“Is it actually incest when you sleep with your own character in a novel that has become reality? The directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris do not answer this question in their fantasy romance 'Ruby Sparks', but with some finesse and cleverness they exhaust the premise in an entertaining way - only the last spark of magic is missing. "

- Carsten Baumgardt, filmstarts.de

"Tragic-comic variant of the Pygmalion myth, which boasts good actors and entertaining situation comedy , but does not implement the development process of the main male character in a particularly subtle way."

“After a six-year break, the directors of 'Little Miss Sunshine' are once again presenting a cinematic gem. Based on a script by the leading actress Kazan, interpersonal lessons about respect for the peculiarities of the partner or alienation are wrapped in an enchanting fantasy robe. Sensitive ode to the magic of writing and the (powerless) power of love "

"In addition to male striving for dominance, screenwriter Zoe Kazan, light-footed and clear-sighted, above all illustrates the paradoxes of human relationships between love, power and dependence."
