(Cuthbert Collingwood) Ted Tinling (born June 23, 1910 in Eastbourne , † May 23, 1990 in Cambridge ) was a British tennis player and - functional , fashion designer and author.

biography

Ted Tinling was born in Eastbourne in 1910 to James Alexander Tinling. In 1923 he began to play tennis after taking a cure for bronchial asthma on the French Riviera . In the "Nice Tennis Club" he trained with the well-known player Suzanne Lenglen . Tinling began a brief active career as a tennis player and referee . During World War II he served in the British Intelligence Corps in Algiers ( Algeria ) and in Germany .

The Briton designed clothing for many female tennis players from the 1950s to the 1970s. In 1949 he was excluded from his position at Wimbledon because of a creation. For his good friend Billie Jean King, he created the clothes for the famous 1973 match, Battle of the Sexes . Stars like Martina Navrátilová , Chris Evert , Evonne Goolagong and Virginia Wade also wore his design .

Ted Tinling was open about his homosexuality . and wrote some books on tennis. In 1986 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

In the British-American biopic Battle of the Sexes - Against every rule , he is portrayed in a supporting role by Alan Cumming .
