Baran bo Odar (born April 18, 1978 in Olten , Canton Solothurn , Switzerland ) is a German director and screenwriter .

Life

Baran bo Odar was “born in Switzerland, but [is] not Swiss.” His father worked in Switzerland as a chemist for the nuclear industry. Baran bo Odar spent his childhood and youth in Erlangen , where he was able to obtain his Abitur at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium . He studied from 1998 to 2006 at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF). At the university he met Jantje Friese . The short film Quietsch , which he filmed during his studies, was released at the Berlinale . His 60-minute graduation film Unter der Sonne was nominated for the 2006 Max Ophüls Prize film festival .

After completing his studies, he initially worked on the production of commercials , music videos and short films . He made his film debut in 2010 with The Last Silence , which was first shown on the Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival . This earned him a stir in the industry journal Variety in 2011 as a director to watch.

Baran bo Odar's film Who Am I was a success and got it attention from Hollywood . Warner Brothers acquired the rights to a remake of the film.

In the summer of 2015 he made Sleepless , a remake of the French thriller Sleepless Night ( Nuit blanche ), as his first film in the USA. The action thriller starring Jamie Foxx was released in theaters in January 2017. After Sleepless , he began working on Dark , the first series shot for Netflix in Germany .

Baran bo Odar lives with his wife Jantje Friese and their daughter in Berlin .
