The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium Erlangen (often abbreviated as ASG Erlangen ) is a scientific, technological and linguistic high school located in Erlangen .
history
The grammar school named after the doctor Albert Schweitzer was established in the 1960s as an offshoot of the Ohm grammar school , as more and more families moved from the city center to the areas west of the Regnitz due to the steadily increasing population . In order to provide a local secondary school in this region and to relieve the already overcrowded Ohm-Gymnasium, the Oberrealschule Erlangen-West was founded on September 7, 1965 . This was initially still in the building of the neighboring Hermann Hedenus School and had around 60 students in two fifth grades.
The grammar school was given its current name, among other things, because the day it was founded coincides with the day of Albert Schweitzer's death, September 4, 1965. The name change took place on November 26, 1965, after the parents' council voted unanimously for the change and the Erlangen university professor Heinrich Franke gave the school the last letter he had received from Albert Schweitzer before his death. In the years that followed, a school building of its own was built and later expanded with a new building to provide enough classrooms for the steadily increasing number of students.
In the 1990s, four mobile classrooms were added in one-story buildings in the schoolyard. Another building, which is used for afternoon care and catering for the students, was built in 2005.
Subjects
Important training areas at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium are natural sciences, languages and mathematics. Two foreign languages are compulsory for every student (English, from grade 5, and Latin / French, from grade 6). In the 8th grade, there is a choice between the scientific and linguistic branches. In the former, chemistry is added as a new subject immediately after the choice, in the latter Spanish as a third foreign language.
In the upper level (11th / 12th grade), pupils have the choice between two foreign languages and one natural science or one foreign language and two natural sciences, regardless of the branch they took in the previous years. In addition, profile subjects are offered in the upper level, which often go into a special area of another school subject. In order to achieve the general university entrance qualification , it is also necessary to complete a project seminar on study and career orientation and a science propaedeutic seminar . Furthermore, a certain number of elective courses must be completed for admission to the Abitur.
