Govinda Van Maele (* 1983 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg film director.

Life

Govinda Van Maele was born in Luxembourg to a Belgian father and a mother from Sri Lanka . He grew up in the country. While still at school he did internships in the Luxembourg film industry (Red Lion - Luxembourg) and received a permanent job there after graduating from high school. On the film set he learned the various branches of film from scratch: as a still photographer , assistant in the sound department , as a camera assistant, assistant to the editor and finally as an assistant director. From May 2011 to July 2014 he was a curator at the Cinémathèque Municipale de Luxembourg.

His first own short film Josh (2008), for which he also wrote the script, was awarded the François Ode Prize at the Hamburg Short Film Festival. In 2008 he took part in the Berlinale Talents . After a few short and documentary films and two episodes of the Luxembourg sitcom "Comeback", he shot Gutland in 2017, his first full-length feature film. Gutland made its premier at the Toronto Film Festival and received an overall positive response from film reviews. Govinda Van Maele is the brother of Narayan Van Maele , who served as Director of Photography at Gutland.
