I Kill Giants ( English for I Kill Giants ) is a Belgian-Sino-British-American coming-of-age - Fantasy - Drama by director Anders Walter from the year 2017 . The script was written by comic book author Joe Kelly , based on his comic of the same name . The film is a 1492 Pictures and Ocean Blue Entertainment production in collaboration with Umedia and XYZ Films . Director and film producer Chris Columbus is one of the producers .

I Kill Giants tells the story of Barbara Thorson , a girl who escapes into fantasy worlds with magic and monsters to escape her sad reality. The main roles are Imogen Poots , Zoe Saldana , Sydney Wade and Madison Wolfe as Barbara . The film had its world premiere on September 9, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival .

The 15-year-old outsider Barbara Thorson, a clever but defiant middle school student, fights against bullying , fear of loss and her own inner demons in her life . She has no friends and in her spare time she mostly plays dungeons and dragons . Her older sister Karen, who is responsible for her and her brother at home, is not making life easy either. Because of her otherness, Barbara is only pejoratively called “nerd queen” by her classmates and mocked because she likes to tell how she hunts and kills giants. Convinced that giants from other worlds are attacking her hometown, she spends her time building weapons and traps to fend off the creatures. However, when Barbara increasingly begins to blur the boundaries between the reality of school and family life with the alternative realities of her fantasy by withdrawing exclusively into her own magical worlds and the hunt for imaginary giants, it is above all the one recently from England Sophia moved to the neighborhood, who slowly befriends Barbara, spends time with her and accompanies her on her forays.

The new school psychologist Mrs. Mollé has also become aware of Barbara, who is now trying to put herself in the girl's mind and, especially when dealing with the "tyrants" at school, who Barbara find strange and repulsive, to the tense relationship to help her sister and difficult family circumstances. However, as Barbara is obsessed with finding and killing the giants that only she can see in order to save the city from impending destruction, this task turns out to be a particularly difficult undertaking. She continues to firmly believe that giants exist and that they are the only ones up to the task. She also hurts the people around her who want to help and protect her. Mrs. Mollé and Sophia finally find out that Barbara's mother is dying and that she couldn't muster the courage to go to her and speak to her.

When an unexpected storm hits the city, Mrs. Mollé confronts Barbara that her mother really wants to see her. During a final battle with a titan, Barbara realizes that she didn't come because of her mother, but only because of Barbara herself, to help her understand that they cannot save her mother. After the summer vacation, in which she spent a lot of time with her, she dies and Barbara learns to deal with it and to accept death as part of life.

On March 23, 2015 it was announced that comic book writer Joe Kelly and writer and illustrator JM Ken Niimura are adapting their joint award-winning graphic novel I Kill Giants for a real film and that Kelly will write the script for the film. The Danish Oscar winner Anders Walter was engaged as a director for the production and is thus making his feature film debut. Also act Chris Columbus , Michael Barnathan and Kim Magnusson as producers for the project. Director Walter said in an interview at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2017 that writer Joe Kelly was not particularly interested in converting his comic to the big screen and required the script to be written by himself in order to agree to an adaptation.

On September 11, 2015, Zoe Saldana and Madison Wolfe were announced to star in the film, with Wolfe playing the role of Barbara , a confused young girl who fights against both her inner and outer "monsters" in her life , while Saldana would impersonate her school psychologist Mrs. Mollé . For the role, Wolfe was selected from 500 young actresses during a casting. On September 10, 2016, British actress Imogen Poots was announced as an additional actress for the film.

The shooting with a budget of 15 million US dollars began on 27 September 2016 in Belgium and Ireland .

Film music

The music for I Kill Giants comes from the French composer Laurent Perez del Mar and was released on March 30, 2018 by the US soundtrack label Varèse Sarabande . The album contains, among other things, a song each by the British indie pop band London Grammar and the Danish singer Rasmus Walter, twin brother of director Anders Walter.

Marketing and Publishing

The film premiered on September 9, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival . In addition, I Kill Giants was shown at the CPH PIX Film Festival in Copenhagen , Denmark on October 11, 2017 . The US premiere also took place on November 11, 2017 at My First Film Fest 2 in New York . In January 2018 the film was shown at the Göteborg Film Festival .

RLJE Films has acquired the rights for distribution on the US market , while XYZ Films has received the worldwide marketing rights for I Kill Giants . The official trailer was released on January 24, 2018 . The official poster for the film was presented in February 2018. It was released in selected US cinemas on March 23, 2018. The film was also made available as video-on-demand at the same time . The publication in the German-speaking area took place on July 26, 2018 by Koch Media on Blu-ray and DVD as well as video-on-demand.

The reviews for I Kill Giants are partly negative and mixed to mostly positive. The Rotten Tomatoes website determined a rating of 79% based on 42 positive and 11 critical reviews, with an average rating of 6.6 out of 10 possible points and a user rating of 83%, with an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 possible points . The critical consensus of the site says: " I Kill Giants' sullen, magical realism sometimes slips into banality, but impressive CGI and a powerful performance by Madison Wolfe pack an unexpected blow." The Metacritic website calculated an average Metascore of 74 with 100 possible points, based on 10 reviews from renowned media and a user rating of 6.9 with 10 possible points. (As of July 29, 2018)

For example, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film is a "sensitive and attractive, if not entirely convincing, pairing of fantasy with real events." Screendaily.com describes I Kill Giants as "special and remarkable", but complains that the film falls into a "tear-shredded mode" towards the end. The Verge criticizes that the CGI effects of the giants correspond to those of a low-budget film and look a little "wobbly", but the film otherwise looks "wonderful" and praises the transfer of the "visually dynamic and fantastic" template into the real world made of moving images, the attraction of which ranges between a Guillermo del Toro film and The Village by M. Night Shyamalan . The New York Times describes I Kill Giants as "magical, subtle, sensitive and touching," but also notes that the plot is thin, but "beautifully executed," and the film also proves that you don't have a big budget for special effects need to "conjure up enchantment and threat."
