Professor Marston & The Wonder Women is a biopic by Angela Robinson that was released in US theaters on October 13, 2017 and in German theaters on November 2, 2017.

Biographical background

William Moulton Marston (right) developed an early form of the lie detector

William Moulton Marston was an American psychologist who, together with his wife Elizabeth , who also worked as a psychologist and taught at various universities, was the creator of " Wonder Woman ". Together with his wife, he also developed an early form of the lie detector , the so-called polygraph , which also served as a model for Wonder Woman's “magic lasso” . The superhero first appeared in All Star Comics # 8 in December 1941 and then reappeared in Sensation Comics # 1 in January 1942. Six months later, the comics were published regularly with her as the main character.

Marston forced his wife into a three-way relationship with Olive Byrne and threatened her with a divorce, which would have marked the end of her academic career in prudish prewar USA. Their marriage resulted in two children, Pete and Olive Ann. Two more children were later added, Byrne Byrne and Donn Byrne, brought into the marriage by her co-wife Olive Byrne, who Elizabeth and her husband later legally adopted.

In an interview that Marston gave his partner in October 1940, this described the great educational potential of comics, whereupon the comic editor Max Gaines hired him as an educational advisor for detective comics .

production

Directed by Angela Robinson , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. As Marston's granddaughter Christie Marston wrote in The Hollywood Reporter , the director had not contacted any member of the family for background information, but merely described her own point of view in the film.

Regarding the character of Wonder Women , the Stuttgarter Nachrichten explains that one of the strongest female characters in the world of comics emerged in a world in which a woman could not even pursue the career that was due to her. How important it is even today that Marston did not want to compromise on his vision of her is shown by the enormous response from young girls and women to Wonder Woman this year.

The shooting took place in Lowell , Massachusetts, not far from the birthplace of William Moulton Marston . On October 17, 2016, a scene was filmed there in the city center, for which parts of Middle Street were redesigned to create a film set that looked as if you were there at the beginning of the 20th century and left old classic cars over the cobblestones drive. Photos of the real Elizabeth, Olive, and William can be seen in the credits of the film.

The score was composed by Tom Howe . The soundtrack to the film includes 26 pieces of music and was released on October 13, 2017.

The film premiered on September 9, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film was released in US cinemas on October 13, 2017. Just about five months earlier, Wonder Woman, a film adaptation of the superhero imagined by William and Elizabeth Marston , had come to the cinemas there, which was strongly based on the comic book, received above-average reviews and made Patty Jenkins the first female director to do a box office result of this magnitude was achieved there. In October 2017 the film was shown at the London Film Festival . A theatrical release in Germany took place on November 2, 2017.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 12 . In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “On the subject of the intimate love story for three , the film pleads for tolerance towards other life plans. The representation of unusual sexuality as well as the conflicts with the social environment can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12, but since the staging is consistently subtle, 12-year-olds are able to put these passages into context and process them. "

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 87 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Screen Daily 's Tim Grierson says the film tries to explain how William Marston's fascination with bondage , submission and punishment helped keep the reader engrossed because his superhero shares them. Angela Robinson quickly portrayed the different personalities of the various characters. Elizabeth was funny, William sociable, and Olive was impressed and almost a little intimidated by both intelligence and self-confidence. The lie detector developed by Marston is an opportunity in the film to introduce the elements of eroticism and danger, both of which emanate from the experiments, into the film, according to Grierson. So asked Elizabeth to speak to her husband about his feelings for Olive when he was plugged into the machine, and when he swore not to love Olive, let them know that he was not telling the truth.

Nadine Lange from the Tagesspiegel explains that Robinson explores the autobiographical connecting lines in a calm, convincing way, with the love story in the foreground, and a recurring motif in the first half of the film are tests with the lie detector developed by the Marstons: “The three question each other each other about their feelings for one another. The measuring strap around the chest acts like the truth lasso from Wonder Woman , violent needle strokes accompany the unwilling confessions of love. "

Anja Kümmel from the Victory Column explains that Angela Robinson's biopic is only marginally about the comic figure, rather the film explores the ups and downs of the polyamorous BDSM relationship that Marston has with his wife Elizabeth and their mutual lover Olive. The lesbian director leaves no doubt that all three love and desire each other, continues Kümmel: "The domestic life of the three adults with their four children seems unpretentious, almost stuffy." Says Kümmel, who plays Rebecca Hall, about the actors her colleagues loosely on the wall, which seems almost imperative here, since Elizabeth has the dominant role within the triple constellation, and the openly gay Luke Evans mime Marston as a kind of Tom of Finland fantasy incarnated .

The Stuttgarter Nachrichten explains that although some of the more incredible details are actually true, Marston actually invented a forerunner of the lie detector, which served as a model for Wonder Woman's Lasso of the Truth, but crucial details were simply invented. The biggest discrepancy, so on in the criticism: “There never was a sexual or even romantic relationship between Olive and Elizabeth, who in the film sometimes degrades Marston himself to an onlooker. [...] Anyone who still dreams of going to the cinema this summer, in which Gal Gadot made our hearts open as the gorgeous demigoddess, will also be excited about Olive, who in the back room of a sex shop with a lasso and tiara becomes Wonder Woman's image. "

Patrick Heidmann of epd Film says that anyone who has never heard of the origins of this superhero will not be amazed at Professor Marston , the story is so unusual, and Robinson cleverly mixes the private lives of her three protagonists with the visual and thematic Contents of the comics. Not everything seems to have been successful, Heidmann continues, such as the somewhat penetrating film music by Tom Howe , but also the sometimes half-baked tone between tragedy and humor. In addition, the two women should have been a little more in the focus of the director, according to Heidmann.
