Professor Marston & The Wonder Women is a biopic by Angela Robinson that was released in US theaters on October 13, 2017 and in German theaters on November 2, 2017.
Biographical background
William Moulton Marston was an American psychologist who, together with his wife Elizabeth , who also worked as a psychologist and taught at various universities, was the creator of " Wonder Woman ". Together with his wife, he also developed an early form of the lie detector , the so-called polygraph , which also served as a model for Wonder Woman's “magic lasso” . The superhero first appeared in All Star Comics # 8 in December 1941 and then reappeared in Sensation Comics # 1 in January 1942. Six months later, the comics were published regularly with her as the main character.
Marston forced his wife into a three-way relationship with Olive Byrne and threatened her with a divorce, which would have marked the end of her academic career in prudish prewar USA. Their marriage resulted in two children, Pete and Olive Ann. Two more children were later added, Byrne Byrne and Donn Byrne, brought into the marriage by her co-wife Olive Byrne, who Elizabeth and her husband later legally adopted.
In an interview that Marston gave his partner in October 1940, this described the great educational potential of comics, whereupon the comic editor Max Gaines hired him as an educational advisor for detective comics .

Directed by Angela Robinson , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. As Marston's granddaughter Christie Marston wrote in The Hollywood Reporter , the director had not contacted any member of the family for background information, but merely described her own point of view in the film.
Regarding the character of Wonder Women , the Stuttgarter Nachrichten explains that one of the strongest female characters in the world of comics emerged in a world in which a woman could not even pursue the career that was due to her. The shooting took place in Lowell , Massachusetts, not far from the birthplace of William Moulton Marston . In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 12 . In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “On the subject of the intimate love story for three , the film pleads for tolerance towards other life plans. The representation of unusual sexuality as well as the conflicts with the social environment can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12, but since the staging is consistently subtle, 12-year-olds are able to put these passages into context and process them. Screen Daily 's Tim Grierson says the film tries to explain how William Marston's fascination with bondage , submission and punishment helped keep the reader engrossed because his superhero shares them. Angela Robinson quickly portrayed the different personalities of the various characters. Elizabeth was funny, William sociable, and Olive was impressed and almost a little intimidated by both intelligence and self-confidence. The lie detector developed by Marston is an opportunity in the film to introduce the elements of eroticism and danger, both of which emanate from the experiments, into the film, according to Grierson. Patrick Heidmann of epd Film says that anyone who has never heard of the origins of this superhero will not be amazed at Professor Marston , the story is so unusual, and Robinson cleverly mixes the private lives of her three protagonists with the visual and thematic Contents of the comics.
