Looking for Oum Kulthum (also Looking for Oum Kulthum ) is a German - Austrian - Italian - Moroccan co-production by Shirin Neshat from 2017 . The premiere of the feature film was made on 30 August 2017 under the 74th Film Festival of Venice , where the film in the section Giornate degli Autori was invited. The cinema release took place in Germany on June 7, 2018 and in Austria on June 15, 2018.

Mitra is an ambitious Iranian artist, mother and wife who dreams of making a film about the singer Oum Kulthum . In doing so, she would like to explore the sacrifices and efforts that have made the success of culthum possible in a patriarchal society. In doing so, she herself encounters the problems that break with conventions and cross borders with them. The sudden disappearance of her son, as well as the complexity of the task of capturing the myth of Oum Kulthum, drive Mitra to a collapse. Ghada, an actress and singer who played the role of Oum Kulthum in Mitra's film, helped Mitra achieve her artistic breakthrough. Mitra achieved fame and success abroad but was unable to return to her family in Iran due to her career.

The shooting took place from October to December 2016, and the shooting took place in Morocco and Vienna . The film was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund , Filmstandort Austria, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg , Federal Film Fund Morocco and DFI; ORF and SNRT were involved . The film was produced by the German Razor Film , co-producers were the Austrian coop99 , the Italian Vivo Film and In Between Art Film as well as the Moroccan Agora Films. Erwin Prib was responsible for the production design, Mariano Tufano for the costume design and Claus Benischke-Lang for the sound. The film is Shirin Neshat's second feature film after Women Without Men (2009).
