Cyril Schäublin (born November 16, 1984 in Zurich ) is a Swiss filmmaker and artist .

Life

Cyril Schäublin, descendant of a watchmaking working-class family from the Swiss Jura , grew up in Zurich. He began making his first films at the age of eleven. After high school, he moved to China and lived in Beijing from 2004 to 2006, where he studied Mandarin at Zhongxi University in Beijing and worked as an assistant on various Chinese film productions. 2006–2012 studied film directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) , followed by an exchange year in Paris in 2009. At the DFFB he was a student of Lav Diaz and James Benning and made numerous short films. 2017 he founded the production company Zealand Film Produktion GmbH in Zurich, named after the amendment Zealand by Robert Walser . He is a member of the European Film Academy and the Swiss Film Academy .

Schäublin's short films have been shown at numerous film festivals around the world. He gained international attention in particular with his debut film Dene wos guet geit , which won top prizes at the Locarno and Edinburgh film festivals and was nominated for the 2018 European Film Prize. The US premiere took place in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the 47th New Directors / New Films Film Festival. Dene wos guet geit has received several international awards and received positive reviews worldwide. In 2018 Dene wos guet geit won the Zurich Film Award . His work has also been shown in galleries and museums. a. Exhibited in the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, MoMA (New York), Pera-Museum in Istanbul, Kunsthaus Graz and in the HKW in Berlin. In addition to films, his work also includes drawings, texts and photographs.
